Metamorphosis *WORK IN PROGRESS
During a period of vision loss, I used the metaphor of being in my cocoon phase because I felt like there was a new world on the other side, a metamorphosis into a new version of myself. I didn’t know why I felt that way, but it helped me get through that time in my life.
This particular piece is the first large painting I created when I started painting in October 2023. When I stepped back, I noticed that the eye shapes formed into a butterfly wing. It became clear to me that this painting embodies my journey as a legally blind artist.
Accessibility Description:
This painting features a close-up of the left half of a woman’s face. Her lips are full and glossy, painted in deep black with subtle highlights. Where her eye would normally be, there is instead an abstract butterfly wing. The wing is formed from many small, teardrop-shaped segments that resemble miniature eyes. These shapes flow outward and upward, extending into the background. The colour palette consists of black, white, gray, and gold, with the gold segments creating a striking contrast against the darker tones. The composition blends the facial features with the abstract elements, giving the piece a dynamic, layered look.
